A cello sonata for the 21st Century With his Ars Musica concert in Bruges Arne Deforce gave a contemporary injection to the cello repertoire. De Standaard, Friday 10 April 2009 Concert review by Maarten Beirens The evening, with Arne Deforce’s cello in the spotlight, was divided in two parts, each with their own style, atmosphere and dynamics. Before the break the Aquarius choir performed Astralis (for choir, cello and timpani) by Wolfgang Rihm, whereas the second part of the evening consisted of a thematically structured tryptic performed by Arne Deforce and pianist Yutaka Oya. The two concert halfs were very different musically. Fortunately this had nothing to do with the quality of the performances, but, unfortunately, everything with the quality of the music. Wolfgang Rihm being a very productive composer, Astralis sounds like an uninspired piece of chain work indeed. The intensity of the second part of the evening made a huge contrast to this. This part of the program was build around Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Intercomunicazione, a ‘historical’ key work of the cello repertoire (from 1967), to which Richard Barrett’s Nacht und Träume is a contemporary answer, while the film projection of Samuel Beckett’s Not I figured as the link between both compositions – also regarding the content. Arne Deforce gave an intense and rock steady performance of Zimmermann’s extremely difficult cello part, into which Yutaka Oya delicately intertwined the piano part in the most subtle way. In Barrett’s piece their duo playing grew even closer, navigating between moments of fascinating sensual splendour of sound and outbursts of swirling virtuosity, to which the electronic part (handled by the composer himself) aptly added an adequate dimension. This composition is without any doubt a masterpiece that applies a firm 21st Century update to the classical cello sonata. The enthusiastic audience was offered as an encore Morton Feldman’s Durations II, a moment of musical serenity, succeeding in marvelously catching in merely a few notes the atmosphere for which Rihm had been looking in vain in his Astralis. Performers: Arne Deforce, cello Yutaka Oya, piano Richard Barrett, electronics Aquarius conducted by Marc Michael De Smet. Compositions by Rihm, Zimmermann and Barrett.
